Padel: Comprehending the Basics
Consider Padel a game between Tennis and Squash. Four players participate in this game in doubles in an enclosed glass and metallic mesh-surrounded Padel tennis court. It can be played in singles with two players as well. A Padel court is generally one-third in size compared to a tennis court.
Coming to how the game is played! Service is underarm. As a player serves a ball, it can bounce off any of the surrounding walls. However, it must hit the opposing turf only once before it is returned. If the ball bounces twice on the opposing player’s turf, the player who served gets the score. Here, strategizing abilities play a more crucial part than strength and power.
Familiarizing with The Padel Tennis Court
A Padel tennis court typically has a length of 20 meters and a width of 10 meters. The back glass walls are 3 meters high, and the side glass walls are a bit taller, going up to 4 meters. Besides glass, the walls can be made of other solid materials like concrete. Metallic mesh is used in constructing the rest of the court walls, and they can be the same height as the side glass walls.
Like in tennis, a net divides the Padel tennis court into two turfs from the middle. The height can be 88 cm at maximum. You will notice one more line dividing the court into two parts along the length. The line drawn at a three-meter distance from the back glass wall marks the service area.
Padel Racquet and Ball
One might confuse a Padel racquet with a tennis racquet. The differentiating factor is size and strings. Padel racquets are smaller in diameter. They have a short handle, a foam core and an outer shell made from fiberglass, carbon fiber, or other materials. Instead of being strings, the Padel racquets are perforated with holes throughout the surface. These holes help reduce the weight and enhance power.
Padel balls tend to be smaller and carry less pressure than tennis balls.
Padel Scoring
Here’s when scores are given in a game of Padel!
- The ball bounces twice on a player’s side.
- A player hits the ball into the net.
- A player hits the ball outside the play area.
- A player directly hits against an opponent’s wall or fence without the ball bouncing first.
